Step 6 — Self-Direction
Self-Direction puts you in control of an annual budget you can use to hire staff, fund respite, recreation, and community supports.

- ✓ Budget request worksheet
- ✓ Staffing plan
How to prepare
- Pick a Fiscal Intermediary (FI) you trust.
- Pick a Broker who'll help build the budget.
- Map your actual weekly schedule before requesting hours.
What to ask your team
- • How long until budget approval?
- • What's the staff hourly rate in our region?
- • Can we use the budget for camp or recreation?
If you are denied or delayed
- → Budget cuts can be appealed. Document why the requested hours are needed.
