IEP review checklist
What to look for before signing an IEP.
Your checklist
- ✓ Present levels reflect current evaluations
- ✓ Annual goals are specific, measurable, and tied to services
- ✓ Service minutes are written clearly (frequency × duration × setting)
- ✓ Related services are listed individually
- ✓ Accommodations match testing accommodations
- ✓ Transition goals if your child is 15+
Your rights
- • You can disagree and write your disagreement on the IEP.
- • You can request an Independent Educational Evaluation at public expense.
- • You can file a State Complaint without going to a hearing.
Red flags
- ! Goals copy-pasted from prior year
- ! 'Consultative' services replacing direct services
- ! Vague language like 'as needed' or 'when available'
