IEP review checklist

What to look for before signing an IEP.

Your checklist

  • Present levels reflect current evaluations
  • Annual goals are specific, measurable, and tied to services
  • Service minutes are written clearly (frequency × duration × setting)
  • Related services are listed individually
  • Accommodations match testing accommodations
  • Transition goals if your child is 15+

Your rights

  • You can disagree and write your disagreement on the IEP.
  • You can request an Independent Educational Evaluation at public expense.
  • You can file a State Complaint without going to a hearing.

Red flags

  • ! Goals copy-pasted from prior year
  • ! 'Consultative' services replacing direct services
  • ! Vague language like 'as needed' or 'when available'
